DIY SEO & Online Marketing tips:
1. Google search results page explained

Author: Danny Llewellyn - Last updated Sunday 6th November 2012

Welcome to my first installment of DIY SEO and marketing tips. My aim over the course of time is to share with you some simple yet fundamental things you can do to improve your website's visibility online as well as giving you a better idea how search engines like Google work. If you find what you learn useful then please simply give me a like on facebook, Google +1 or share with a friend.

The first thing I want to cover is the Google search results page, it's elements and how they work.

When you perform a search on Google the results page is broken down into different sections. These sections include Google Adwords, Google Maps, Google Places and the Organic search results. Click on the links or image areas for a breakdown on each area.

Google Adwords

Adwords is the perfect place to start an online marketing campaign for your website. It operates on flexible monthly plan where you have full control over choice of keywords, geographic location you are promoting to and how much you want to spend each month. Let's say you put £50 in the pot for the month and your chosen keyword and geo location is 'Plumbers Peterborough', you will appear in the red zones as shown above and depending on that month's competition for the same words ie 'plumbers peterborough' will depend on whether your advert is shown on page1, 2 or 3 etc. Every time a viewer clicks on your advert the value of that link will be deducted from your monthly adwords allowance until the pot runs out.

For example:
Monthly investment £50.00
plumbers Peterborough value = £1.00 per click

After 50 clicks the pot runs out and you can either top it up or start again next month or stop.

Benefits
If your website is low in ranking and does not appear high on the search engines then Adwords is a great way to get to the top on Google instantly.
Instant results and the more you spend the more you guarantee the 1st page position. However the campaign is only effective as long as you keep investing in it. Another way to utilise this investment is to push your pages higher up the organic part of the search engines through an SEO/Online Marketing campaign. The benefits of this are much longer lasting and can achieve just a good results only over time the investment is lower.

Google Places - A FREE platform to promote your business

If you haven't added your website to Google Maps/Places then I strongly recommend you do so! It is a free service from Google to promote your business and can get you close to top on page1 depending on how many other competitors have already listed. The maps is cool and is easy to link on your website for people to find you. To add your website and business details you will need to open a Google account which is dead simple and then follow through the instructions.

Tips: add as much info as possible including all your services or products and what geographical locations you wish to target. Activate using the automatic phone option rather than by post as I have heard of cases where postal entries didn't get off the ground.

Google Organic Results

These results are all the pages on the web that Google knows about. Getting your pages on here is really simple, all you or your webmaster needs to do is submit a sitemap.xml file to Google. The xml file will have a full listing of all the pages in your website for Google to index. To submit the file you will need a Google account and then go to settings, webmaster tools and add the url of your site and then from there you can submit the xml file. Once added your pages will start to show up on searches within 7 days.

Tips: every time you add a new page to your site you will need to update the xml file and then re-submit to get the new page listed asap. If you remove a page from your site or give it a new file name it is best to let Google know so that it can be removed from the search results. To do this you can add a robots.txt file to your sites root folder and a simple disallow command followed by the file name and extension will do the trick. Next time the engines bot comes round it will read the robots.txt file and tell google to remove that particular page or pages from it's index. The quickest way is to submit the file to Google through the same process as adding a sitemap.xml.
Click here to download the robots.txt file with disallow already set, just add the page name and extension you want to remove. ie:

User-agent: *
disallow: mypage.php
disallow: myotherpage.html

From my experience most people tend to trust the organic results over the paid adwords at the top and right side this is why it is so important to try and get your website as high up as possible and page 1 has to be the goal! If your page 2 or lower then your website is more than likely not bringing in any new leads or sales as most people searching will click on several of the links in the first page and then if they still haven't found what they are looking will probably change their search. There are many factors involved in achieving page 1 and I will go into more depth on this over time, one thing I can say is that once you are there and hit the bullseye it can have an incredible effect on your turnover and make all the difference even success and failure.

Over the next few months I will be adding more tips which if not already in place will certainly boost your ranking and get you higher up the Google search engine so pop back soon.
